Let's say it clearly: Boris is a language

A talk about this iconic TV series while we put quails in the oven for the Italian Republic Day.

Mattia Chiappani 2 minutes to read it

More than ten years have passed since on Italian television has arrived one of the television series destined to create one of the cult following greater than ever, at least for an Italian product. We're talking about Boris, show that has debuted way back in and still today gathers an incredible number of fans in Italy. On the occasion of Festa del Grazie (Feast of Thanks ) Festa della Repubblica (Italian Republic Day) we have decided to talk a little about this iconic show, focusing on one particular aspect of it: the possibility of quoting it repeatedly. All while munching quails, obviously. What Festa della Repubblica (Italian Republic Day) would be without quails, after all?

I'm fluent in Boris

The reasons why Boris has managed to win over such a solid audience are a lot. The charm of some of its characters, its cynicism, the perfect lucidity with which it has been able to show the situation of the Italian television, the performances of its actors... It's certainly not easy to identify just one reason for its success. Who knows, maybe even the bizarre cameos of the gorilla of Crodino have contributed in some way.

But what characterizes this show and has certainly played a key role in the duration of its success is its being widely quotable in an infinite number of situations. The sentences, the situations, the dialogues of the set of Occhi del Cuore 2 (The eyes of the heart 2) adapt to so many moments and are so iconic to remain etched in the minds of the fans who have known them.

The most obvious ones are the recurring catchphrases. From “Genio!” (Genius!) to “Dai dai dai!” (Come on come on come on!), passing through “Apri tutto!” (Open all!) by Duccio and Biascica up to the infamous “Bucio de culo!” (Fucking lucky!), there are many terms that characterize some characters of the series and that sometimes we find ourselves repeating, reminding them. However the truly iconic and unforgettable moments of the series are others.

Single scenes, memorable moments, that have made us bend with laughters and that have impressed themselves in our mind. All with a quality of writing and a strength to come back to our mind whenever we find ourselves in a vaguely similar situation. And so we recall that sentence, that situation, strengthening the myth of Boris in those who already know it and spreading the word among those who have not yet watched the story of René Ferretti and his shabby troupe.

The Roberti Saviani of the serial screenplay

The key of all this probably lies in Giacomo Ciarrapico, Mattia Torre and Luca Vendruscolo, the trio of screenwriters who have created the series. The fact that they aren't limited themselves to press F5 sometimes, but that they have created from zero some but surreal and overwhelming dialogues have served as the backbone of the show, more than many other aspects. But above all they succeeded to engrave them in the mind of the fans.

How to forget for example the theories of Duccio about the risks of reading? Or the countless attempts of René to write a greeting message to Roberto Benigni? Or again, the vision that Stanis has of the work of Kubrick, of Shakespeare and obviously of the Tuscans? All moments fleeting in their own ways, which haven't necessarily marked the overall adventures of the show, but who has watched Boris don't forget.

Moments like these crowd the series and every time that among friends comes out an argument that vaguely approaches to those dealt with in those scenes is a moment to recall (strictly by heart) the whole dialogue. The triggers are so many and if it may seem difficult to meet them in everyday life, the reality is that this isn't absolutely the case, indeed they are much more frequent than you think. And it's easy that each of these then recall other ones, in a continuous cycle of references to share packages, political photographies, daughters of Mazinga and April overtimes.

Entire conversations can be held up iconic references of this series, often practically incomprehensible to those who don't know it. And so afternoons and evenings pass, in hilarious speeches that somehow manage to bring together Pomezia, la locura (the madness) and the Pachino tomatoes in the crazy water bream. All while always remembering how this iconic series has marked us and still remains one of the best products ever produced by Italian television.

And now, before starting the traditional quails-based lunch, let's sing nicely. But please, don't go up a third!
