Eh?

Avevate notato tutte queste citazioni a film e serie cult in Boris?

All the references of Boris to movies and TV series

• one day ago

Nine years have passed since the last episode of Boris was aired, yet it's missing to us enormously. The series born from the idea of Luca Manzi and Carlo Mazzotta with just three seasons has become a veritable cult TV product and to make a very large fanbase fall in love. The secret of the uniqueness of Boris resides in a great script and in a choral cast full of unique and exquisitely funny characters. The great merit of the series however has been that of having made fun kindly and never with any excess of envy the Italian television landscape and its terrible clichés.

Boris has described well the world of the Italian dramas with theirs problems, mediocre actors and with its photography that must never be better than the one of the commercials. But it has also denounced the recommendations and the pacts with the network to which a poor director must descend in order to work, sacrificing the quality on the altar of the profit. But wanting to be a series a little Italian, the authors have also decided to include several references to overseas series and movies that clash with the Italianness of Gli occhi del cuore (The eyes of the heart).

There are many references to the most popular TV series that we have noticed in the three seasons of Boris!

Let's start with the first episode: perhaps you have never noticed it but the title of the first episode (Il mio primo giorno) (My first day) is identical to the one of the pilot of a very loved US dramedy, Scrubs. The choice is very appropriate since both J.D. and Alessandro live a rather traumatic start in their working environment. But this isn't the only tribute done to a great American series! Do you know that the opening scene of the first episode of the second season of Boris (La mia Africa) (My Africa) follows the beginning of Lost? The close up of the eye of Alessandro who regains consciousness after having taken a shock, reminds us in fact the traumatic awakening of Jack Shephard.

The second season is full of references to lucky overseas shows and in fact in the twelfth episode we have another interesting quote.

In fact is used a particular type of framing called split screen which was also used in 24. Practically: to show the fact that events are taking place simultaneously in different places, the screen is divided into small boxes and the time is shown in digital format in the center. And could it miss a quote to The Secrets of Twin Peaks? Obviously not. During the credits of the last episode of the second season you can hear a voice-over repeating one of the questions that has most obsessed the fans: who has killed Laura Palmer? Furthermore the titles of many episodes honor some masterpieces of world filmography: the first two episodes of the second season (La Mia Africa (My Africa)) recall the famous movie by Pollack of .

In the first season then the title of the thirteenth episode is Stanis non deve morire (Stanis must not die), a clear reference to the famous movie Misery non deve morire (Misery). And how not to mention the two episodes of the series entitled Ritorno al futuro (Back to the Future) as the cult movie of the Il cielo sopra Stanis (The sky above Stanis) is also a tribute to Wim Wenders and to his Il cielo sopra Berlino (Der Himmel über Berlin). Furthermore the director is mentioned several times. In fact in this episode Stanis announces that Wenders is about to visit the set of Gli occhi del cuore (The eyes of the heart) to see him while working. In the end the man doesn't show up and the star of the drama expresses all his disappointment in a message written in an English to say the least macaronic.

But the Italian off-series has often also mentioned the most important directors of world cinema!

René Ferretti has to shoot low level dramas to live, but he's a man who has studied so much and who has learned from great masters. For this reason in the series he mentions Roberto Benigni, Bertolucci and when he has to shoot a nude scene, to avoid Corinna getting embarrassed, he decides to use a technique of Lars von Trier and to force all the people on the set to undress. But has also entered history the judgment of Stanis on the great Stanley Kubrick, considered by the character of Boris an incompetent.

I consider Kubrick an incompetent! I consider him the classic example of artistic instability, be patient! He's one who faced a genre, failed and switched to another genre. How do we want to call him? Eh? Then years and years between a movie and another one. Years and years of what, eh? Of deep embarrassment because the previous movie, have patience!

And speaking of directors the cameo of Paolo Sorrentino entered the history of TV in a fun episode of the third season of Boris. The director goes to the set of Medical Dimension to persuade Fabiana to accept acting in his movie and he's mistaken by the crew for Matteo Garrone.

There have also been several references to famous movies by Lynch in the third season: in the sixth episode, Martellone wears the same jacket as the protagonist of Cuore selvaggio (Wild at Heart), while in the twelfth episode there's a tribute to Mulholland Drive. We must also remember the reference to the cult saga Guerre Stellari (Star Wars) in the last episode of the second season in which Sandroni and Tarzanetto appear behind René and tell him to use the force, quoting a scene of Il ritorno dello Jedi (The return of the Jedi). Finally the arrival on the set of Corinna in the episode My Africa is a quote from Titanic: the actress arrives on a vintage car and with a big hat with a bow, honoring Rose's arrival in Southampton in the movie by Cameron.

Had you noticed all these quotes to movies and cult series in Boris? It seems to me a good reason to do a good rewatch and find other ones, if we have missed them!
