Boris, ci manchi terribilmente

Boris, we miss you enormously

Very often we find ourselves despising any Italian television product, sometimes without trying to look at a specific one with the due attention. Indeed, the television panorama managed by Rai and Mediaset has produced a myriad of dramas quite questionable. And of questionability they have a little everything, starting from the dialogues to the limit of the incomprehensible to arrive at decidedly grotesque settings and passing through cast otherwise talented. It's therefore easy to be amazed when you come across that needle in the haystack in which many Italians have hoped and still hope. One of these exceptions is represented by Boris, series produced by Fox, aired from to .

Boris is lovely from the first episode, with a wonderful quote. The title “Il mio primo giorno” (My first day), indeed, is a clear tribute to Scrubs which pilot has the same title.

We immediately understand that this series will not propose the usual topics politically correct to which the dramas prostrate themselves so slavishly. Boris consists of three seasons of pure and contemptuous irony. Each episode is the mirror of Italy with which we come into contact every day. The setting is the one of a set, but it's plausible to extend the dynamics we see throughout the series to the most working environments.

Boris tells the behind the scenes of the series Gli Occhi del Cuore, a fictional drama that, despite the exasperating tones of the satire, perfectly reflects the reality of the Italian dramas.

The main protagonist is Alessandro, a boy almost 30 years old, just hired as an intern. It's humanly impossible not to identify with him and his condition. Boris shows us a reality of precariousness, unfortunately rooted, represented precisely by the character played by Alessandro Tiberi. Iconic is the scene in which our protagonist signs a contract that the producer Sergio immediately specifies to be “not really a contract, rather an insurance” (episode 1x02, L'anello del conte (The count's ring)). Practically the company is protected while the worker, in case of an accident (and Alessandro will suffer several injuries), will not be protected in any way. Initially the boy will try to fight to get some rights, but then he will become accustomed to his condition to become almost addicted to it.

Alessandro represents those guys who make their best to realize themselves, but whose creativity and desire to do are punctually trampled by a corrupt work system and mentality that make them hard to improve.

Another character that has made us fall in love with this product is the very loved René Ferretti, unexceptionably played by Francesco Pannofino. René is an already disenchanted director, although in the end still hopes to be able to shoot something that can be defined of quality. In the course of his career he has shot rubbish, as he himself admits, which was necessary exclusively to survive. When in the third season he finally seems to get the chance to shoot Medical Dimension, the viewer believes in the project together with the director. The expressive face of Pannofino gives us hope that the change is possible, even in Italy.

And this is why we break our hearts when the dream shatters.

Together with René we understand that exist superior strengths that don't want the change in Italy, servant of the Auditel and of the bad taste.

This series doesn't make use of common places, leaves nothing to chance and, most important thing, manages to make us laugh and at the same time reflect. And it miss us because it's the demonstration that Italy is still capable of producing quality products that would restore artistic value to our beloved peninsula! All that remains is to ask ourselves why, in a country where have been produced 588 episodes of Incantesimo (Enchantment) and over 5000 of Un Posto al Sole (A Place in the Sun), is not possible to produce at least another season of a smart and counter-current series like Boris.
