«Scusi, ho calcolato male i tempi.

«No, mai.

Ninni Bruschetta: «From "Boris" to "Quo vado?", my life as wingman»

He has played in many dramas and successful movies. But never in the leading role. About this (and much more) he speaks in the book «Manuale di sopravvivenza dell'attore non protagonista» («Survival guide of the supporting actor»)

Ninni Bruschetta comes to our appointment with a slight delay, but in great form. «Excuse me, I have miscalculated the times. I am not even able to finish my 10 km of daily running, in the residence the boiler has broken and I have made a cold shower, but here I am!». Ninni who? You would say. Then looking at the photo you say: «Oh yes, the one of, of...». Dozens of roles, in TV series and in movies (not least, he was the Minister of Labour in «Quo vado?» (Where I go?) by Checco Zalone: «One of the most intelligent men I have worked with»), but never that of the main character. Because there are two planets in the world of the actors: the one of the protagonists: «That must be good, beautiful, recommended and also very lucky». And the one of the supporting roles, which have to be even more obstinate and prepared. As told by the actor and director from Messina in the autobiographical «Manuale di sopravvivenza dell'attore non protagonista» (Survival guide of the supporting actor) (Fazi Editore). Book «thought but written in one go» where he makes a severe analysis, ironic and fiercely realist of his world.

Ninni, why have you written this book?

«The director Renato De Maria suggested it to me when I told him about the adventures that I had to do for shooting, at the same time and in three different cities: "Squadra antimafia" (Anti-mafia team), "Boris" and "Fuoriclasse" (A League of Their Own). Considered that in addition to the dramas I also make movies and theater let's say that I have a busy life!».

Reading the book it seems you're proud to have never played in the role of protagonist.

«No, indeed, through Sorrisi I make a plea to producers and directors: assign to me the role of the protagonist!».

Did you never go even close?

«For "Boris" I had done the audition for the lead role (then assigned to Francesco Pannofino, Ed.). Sometimes someone calls me to tell me that has in mind for me the most important role, but then they assign it to others. Also because I believe that still exist protagonists that have a contract with the network. Recently I had done the audition for the movie about Boris Giuliano. I hoped for it, but they have chosen my friend Adriano Giannini».

Speaking of friends, in the book you quote the slogan of Nino Frassica: «I have never refused anything».

«It's true. You can not and you must not give up anything because the work must be respected. Although I can afford to avoid making some things, I have difficulty to refuse them. Fortunately there is a quotation for each actor, so certain proposals they don't make to you because they know that you cost too much».

What does it mean that you are listed?

«It's like if we have some seniority increases. More roles you play, more your quotation increases. The insiders know how much you cost a day.».

But it's not said that a great role is also the best paid one.

«Indeed. When I agreed to play in "Boris" I gave up another Rai TV series, where I would have taken the double of the money and made the half of the poses, just because I believed in the role of Duccio, the brilliant director of photography of the series».

In the book you tell hilarious episodes of your career. But also bitter...

«I remember one of my first drama. Each episode was shooted by a different director. There was one that never spoke to me during the week when we worked together. He only confonted with the protagonist, although I was the antagonist. It has been a life experience, a little extreme. But it has taught me to work alone».

But now you're a little famous.

«It's since ten years that people recognize me with a certain continuity. There are the fans of "Boris", that I identify immediately by the way they block me on the street (as Frassica says: «They laugh in the face»). And those of "Squadra antimafia" (Anti-mafia team), where even if Alfiere is dead you can still see his photos at police headquarters and sometimes he's mentioned. Now then after "Quo vado?" (Where I go?) people who stop me have increased by 300%. But I always say to my kids that, you don't know when, but all this will end. Suddenly. People forget. Or maybe I will be tired of this job».

Do you mean that you regret not having done the lawyer, like your father?

«No, never. I'm convinced to have done the right choice. Although sometimes I would like to do a manual work, like the goldsmith or the carpenter».

The British actor Daniel Day-Lewis has done it. He gave up everything to be a shoemaker in Tuscany.

«Yes, but he has put aside a few millions of dollars. In Italy you're oppressed by the taxes and it's impossible to put something aside!».
