10 modi di passare il Capodanno con Netflix

Chi guarda Netflix a Capodanno...

The Propaganda Game

Hell or high water

Who watches Netflix at New Year...

"If it were up to me I'd be at home on New Year", every year we hear many people to repeat this phrase, evidently forced by friends to go to parties and feasts against their will. Stay Nerd says no to the violence against the lazy and less partygoer people, and does it by proposing to these poor victims of the system some alternatives in the case they want to spend the evening at home in front of the TV, blanket over the legs and bottle of sparkling wine to be opened at midnight. Follow us then in this list of proposals, all available on Netflix, in which we have tried to dig in the catalog to find products a little more sought after, or at least a little mainstream, so you have not to think each paragraph "Phew, I've already seen this", ranging even a lot between the different kinds of entertainment (it does not live only by TV series). Good reading, and happy new year!

Going Clear: Scientology e la Prigione della Fede (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief)

In Ron Hubbard founds the Church of Scientology, known for having welcomed within its ranks well known actors as John Travolta and Tom Cruise. Its reputation has been also given by the mystery that covered the internal dynamics in it, the different ranks and how to access it, in addition to the theology in strict sense. This very interesting documentary has the objective to pierce this veil of Maya through the testimonials of those who have made part of it, revealing some inner mechanism and the basic idea. In addition to this is told who has been Hubbard, his successors and their relationship with the power. Basically it's a Pandora's Box uncovered, from which comes out an amount of material worthy of note not at all indifferent.

The Propaganda Game

Álvaro Longoria wanted to shoot a documentary about North Korea, but it's not so easy to enter. There is however a military in North Korea, the only, of Spanish nationality. So the director has managed to realize The Propaganda Game, a very interesting documentary under different points of view. The first is, of course, the pleasure of being able to keep an eye in a state for which hardly we would get a visa. The second is the choice of the director of trying to make North Corea to the best possible, avoiding easy speeches that depict it monstrous regardless. The third, the most important: is really that is shown to us, the true nation? Longoria is obviously escorted around Pyongyang by employees of the regime, that decide what he can see and when. He talks to people with whom he is allowed to speak. But these people really tell the truth, or play a part? What is shown to him is the life of every day, or something orchestrated for propaganda? We don't know it, and the director doesn't know it, but certainly all this sets the right tone to a very successful documentary.

Psycho-Pass (Original Japanese:

Let's pass to a bit of healthy animation with Psycho Pass, one of the most structured products of the last years. Near future, the society is now managed by a super computer that through algorithms can predict the chance that a person commits crimes, becoming de facto judge and executioner. The work is carried out by the police through special guns connected to the aforementioned computer, that automatically pass in execution mode when is focused a target considered dangerous to the society. The series follows the stories of a police department divided among regular officers and their subordinates, the "latent criminals", people with an high crime coeffient but still manageable, used as arm of this system to cover the conventional policemen. Production I.G., already responsible of Ghost in the Shell, confirms itself expert in making science fiction products deep and cared both in the themes as in the aesthetic appeal, giving a truly beautiful anime that can only make the viewer reflect about the current society.

Wolf Children (Original Japanese:

A beatiful story, first of all, even if the pretext from which it starts and on which then it develops itself is quite surreal. Hana falls in love with a boy, who reveals himself to be half man and half wolf. From the relationship with this born two sons, half men and half animals, who for various reasons Hana will have to grow in the countryside alone. The result is a deeply moving story about the growth, about the relating with the others by accepting own and others differences, and about the importance of learning to do it during the growth, for then to be able to find, in freedom, the own place in the world succeeding so to be happy. An animation movie very delicate and clever, of which we recommend viewing.

Il giardino delle parole (The Garden of Words - Original Japanese:

Makoto Shinkai is getting a success never seen before with Your Name, which is preparing to become the most successful Japanese animated movie ever, while the director is compared to the master Miyazaki. Shinkai has already confirmed himself very good in writing love stories which have the same impact on the viewer of a knife driven through the heart, and with Il Giardino delle Parole (The Garden of Words), short feature of 45 minutes, is confirmed the ability of the director in telling love stories. Takao has the habit of skipping school in rainy days, and in one of these he meets Yukari, with which will be born something over the course of their meetings, never planned but recurring in every rainy day. But unfortunately the rainy season doesn't last forever... In this beautiful story is added the typical aesthetics of the production of Shinkai, meticulous in the creation of incredibly beautiful and detailed backdrops. If you want to suffer a little, here you are served.

Lui è tornato (Look Who's Back - Original German: Er ist wieder da)

Timur Vermes writes and publishes in Lui è Tornato (Look Who's Back), best seller in Germany, satirical book in which is supposed a return of Hitler, exactly the one by now of 80 years ago, to the present day. In has been made from it an eponymous movie, able to detach itself in an enough clear way from the mother work and to increase the anxiety effect. It's about a work fundamentally ironic, in which the protagonist actor, dressed as Führer, goes around Germany and talks with people, that takes photographs with him, while pursues the same ideas that the true Hitler promoted in the far years '30. It makes you laugh, and a lot of people he meets has fun, but at the same time it gets out a barely concealed resentment against immigration primarily and more generally of other minorities. The result is a movie/documentary certainly ironic, but also unsettling when you're in front of people that, interviewed, would seem almost not to disdain the return of some manners of one of the greatest shames of the human history.

Source Code

After the excellent Moon and before the less excellent Warcraft, Duncan Jones has realized Source Code, in which he shows that he is able to recycle the same eight minutes for a whole movie without making us bored, and even trapping the viewer on the chair. Colter Stevens is the subject used to test an experimental tool, the Source Code precisely, which allows him to revive the eight minutes before the death of the people, because this last period of time remains etched in the brain after the death. His objective is to figure out who is the bomber that has made to detonate a bomb on a train, and he will carry it out reliving in loop the same eight fateful minutes, discovering obviously also many others mysteries. Jones demonstrates himself in this movie, as in the previous one, perfectly capable to play and build stories with a few spaces and actors. If you want an opera sci-fi but not too much, this is the one on which you have to bet.

Hell or high water

Two brothers with very different characters end up to make a series of robberies around Texas with the purpose of saving the family farm, while two rangers chase them. It can be simply summarized so the plot of Hell or High Water, but a little of injustice is done to it, because the movie of David Mackenzie has much more to say compared to what a simple synopsis makes. It's first of all a movie that works on the characters, all four, well characterized in their relationships and in their backgrounds. Then there's Texas, which already with its landscapes approaches the movie to a Western, that Hell or High Water is not only for its setting, but also for the general mood and the situations in which the protagonists will find themselves more and more times, in a game of cops and robbers that lasts for the entire movie. But, first of all, there is a constant and incessant rhythm that manages to entertain the audience optimally, making the movie worthy of a vision to spend a couple of hours disengaged lost in the Texas huge and deserted expanses, on board a pick-up.

Boris

The King of the Italian TV series stands firm on its throne for a few years, immovable. But we know that some of you has never seen it, Boris, and it's therefore appropriate to remind you that exists, that is on Netflix, where recently has also been added Boris - Il Film (Boris The movie). Three seasons of behind the scenes of the most rough dramas that we produce in Italy, with an epic cast of characters, with cheating producers and directors with easy outburst, passing through first women and actors who believe to be a little too successful. Swear words as if they rained combine with very cultured quotes and scenes shot in a so beatiful way almost out of place in a product of this type, but that are there to show us that another TV is possible. Incredibly funny and incredibly smart, the one at first glance is a simple comic opera is instead a reflection about the current situation of the Italian television scene, and sorry if it's a little.

Chef's Table

Let's close with some food, even if probably after the binges of the festivals you really would not want it too much. Chef's Table is a series of two seasons with six episodes each, each of which focuses on an international level chef. It deals then with short documentaries, which however manage to avoid the stereotypes of the television programs of which our TV channels are flooded, to tell with elegance people who are behind the dishes, their philosophies and their approach to the world of the food, dodging the crowd of irascible judges to try to tell us something true. It's about people coming from very different parts of the world and with different curricula, so it's also appreciable the chance to peek behind the kitchens very distant from us, both physically and in the sense of food culture.
