Boris sbarca su Netflix - viva la merda!

"Perché la qualità c'ha rotto i coglioni"

"Signori ciak... motore eeeeee azione!" Seppia, a.k.a.

E dai dai dai!

"Because the quality has broken us the balls"

"Gentlemen ciak... start the camera aaaaaand action!" A nice day Giacomo Ciarrapico, Luca Vendruscolo and Mattia Torre have an idea: to write a television series that shows the behind the scenes of the making of a television series, Italian. And when we talk about Italian television series, with very few exceptions (Boris is one of these, by the way), it can only speak about mediocrity, carelessness and... shit. Because the motto of René Ferretti (a monumental Francesco Pannofino), the director of Occhi del cuore 2 (Eyes of the heart 2) (fictional sentimental-drama realized for the equally fictitious network Magnesia), is just this: hurrah for the shit! A concept as simple as truthfully, whose deeper meaning can be summarized in the brilliant maxim of Duccio (Ninni Bruschetta), the director of photography cocaine addict, to the young intern of direction Alessandro (a.k.a. Seppia (Cuttlefish), a.k.a. Alessandro Tiberi): "Do you know why the photography in the series sucks? Because THEY want it, the network. Because people changes channel if sees that the photography is better than the one of the advertising."

Here, if you have never seen Boris, first: you will be crucified in the mess hall, second you will have perfectly understood where the sitcom wants to end. Through a series of characters to the limit between the caricature and parody, the three directors have wanted to represent the sad reality of the television industry made in Italy, taking surely to the limit certain situations but remaining anchored, by their own admission, to the reality that have been able to "admire" in years of work in this area. From the absentee and charlatan screenwriters, the director of photography that instead of preparing the lights "open all the light" and he doesn't give a shit, because "we are not making Kubrick at all", to arrive to the delegate of production that in order to save on the budget would be able to cancel the lunch boxes and pick up the extras on the street. And from the technical department, from the behind the scenes, then we move to the true cross of the Italian television series: the actors. The mirror of a system that promotes the protection more than the talent and whose reflection are the two protagonists of Occhi del cuore (Eyes of the heart): Stanis La Rochelle (the versatile Pietro Sermonti) and Corinna Negri (a surprisingly very talented Carolina Crescentini). Indolent, capricious, vain and... dogs, mostly Corinna ("damned bitch").

The first with the obsession to act English style, American style, in short in every way except the right one, because it would be "too Italian", the second shamelessly recommended by the high levels of the production for hers shamelessly activity under the managerial desks. And then there is a figure that could pass unnoticed and which represents, completely, the highly satirical spirit of Boris, the slave intern. A poor man forced to work even 12 hours a day, under the tortures of the chief electrician Biascica (The hyena Paolo Calabresi), for a starvation pay and the vain promise of growth. A painful reality for many professionals forced to come to terms every day, especially after exiting a random movie academy with the promise to break through. At the end however, everything revolves around the figure of the director, René Ferretti, the Master Ferretti. One that considers a series as Occhi del cuore (Eyes of the heart) a "bancomat", one that persists to look for the quality in the mediocrity (among dolly, steadycam and totally useless carriages) only to then to remember himself that "it needs to bring home the day" and so it's needed to get back to do the things "messily", without many frills, placing the camera where it ends up and giving for good even the most depressing take. An idol, a total idol.

And the strength of Boris is in creating some unique characters, compellingly reckless and incompetent to the breaking point (all except the inflexible first assistant director Arianna, the very good Caterina Guzzanti). If you thought that the only Italian series worthy of attentions were Romanzo Criminale (Criminal Romance) and Gomorra (Gomorrah) and that a successful Italian sitcom was pure utopia, well, Boris will make you change your mind. Because Occhi del cuore (Eyes of the heart) is actually the emblem of the italianity, at the net of the various Un posto al sole (A place in the sun), Centovetrine (One hundred showcases), Vivere (Live) and the rest of the junk crowding public and private networks. Of course, it remains still a series "of niche", for its being distinctly addressed to the "insiders", to those at least know the film crafts and the the various departments of a movie or TV set, but once started it, you will watch the three season of Boris as if nothing happened, killing yourself with laughters at every explosion of ignorance of the good René, at the umpteenth boastfulness of Biascica claiming "the overtimes of April" and after each threat of Stanis to involve his legals to dissolve his contract.

The fierce and ruthless criticism "to the system" of Boris is one of the very rare examples of clever writing and unconventional comedy, who manages to create characters and truthful situations while exasperating tones and evolutions. Just to make it clear who come from abroad to explain us how to make the things, that we like to make them messily! So if you were looking for a reason to renew your Netflix subscription, now you have one more than valid: to enjoy the one that perhaps is the only, true, really funny Italian sitcom. And come on come on come on!
