The 7 best Italian TV series

Are three the words that come in mind speaking about Italian TV series of the last years: it can be done. After a very long time spent to admire from far the quality of Anglo-Saxon TV series, finally something is moving, finally even in Italy it's moving from drama (a low budget product and with poor ambitions) to TV series. This is happening thanks to a fruitful exchange between the genre literature and television, but also thanks to the influence of foreign models more and more present and influential. Draw up a ranking of the best Italian TV series is not an immediate thing, but certainly it's encouraging to observe that the general level is growing more and more. With some peaks of absolute international value.

Romanzo Criminale (Criminal Romance)

When you say the pupil who surpasses the teacher. Drawn from the homonymous novel by Giancarlo De Cataldo, the series comes a few yeas after the movie by Michele Placido and immediately it imposes itself as a great success with critic and audience. Inspired by the events of the gang of the Magliana, the series has the merit of being a criminal story that has nothing to envy to the large foreign productions. The secret of the success of Romanzo criminale (Criminal romance) is also in an enviable cast, as far from being claimed at the times of the realization and in a director that at this time is the absolute king of the genre narration in Italy, that is Stefano Sollima.

Gomorra (Gomorrah)

A book of great success, a beatiful movie directed by Matteo Garrone. Hard to make a triplet, placing a TV series able to match what has been done previously. Nevertheless Stefano Sollima succeeded, because Gomorra (Gomorrah) is a trip into a world that seems far away, but is part of our country and of our present. The creation of iconic characters, the choice of relying on a perfect cast without big names of the Italian cinema and then the ability to re-invent a language that conquers even those who struggle to understand the dialect of Campania. In Gomorra (Gomorrah) everything works at the maximum of the chances and the wait for the second season is very high.

Boris

The demonstration that an Italian approach to the comedy is not only possible, but it can give enormous satisfactions. Launched as an experiment on Sky in , Boris has quickly become a cult series, full of catchphrases and of moments to watch and rewatch after many years. The story is that of a crew of an Italian fiction, one of those played by actors with perfect diction, but without any actorial capabilities: a slalom through unforgettable characters, which make the laziness its characteristic trait. Wanting to expand the horizon, a ruthless look to the contemporary Italy and to all the vices and habits of the Italians. From the series was also made a movie, which has not yet had the expected success.

Non pensarci (Don't think about it)

In the beginning it was a movie, homonymous, starring Valerio Mastandrea, Giuseppe Battiston and Anita Caprioli. They are the Nardini brothers, sons of a businessman who made his fortune with the cherries in alcohol. In 2009 the director Gianni Zanasi, together with Lucio Pellegrini, decides to give new life to the tragicomic adventures of the Nardini family bringing them on TV. It's a surreal portrait and certainly over the lines of the average Italian family, able to tell the economic crisis by making smile, but always with a bit of bitter taste. A perfect cast with the addition of Luciana Littizzetto, guest star of the television version.

1992

The big question: is it possible to transform into a big story events that occurred a few years ago? Or better: is it possible to tell facts about living people and that have had consequences of which we find traces in politics and in the current society? 1992 is the answer that yes, it can be done. The title says everything: it speaks about the year that has forever changed the Italian history, the one in which an entire executive class (and a same idea of Italy) has ended behind the bars or overwhelmed by the accusations of corruption and bribes. Tangentopoli (Bribesville), in short. 1992 delves that world through various characters: the exuberant manager of the large advertising agency, the showgirl in search of success at all costs, the idealistic cop, the young daughter of an industrialist. Many points of view to observe the implosion of a nation.

L'Ispettore Coliandro (The Inspector Coliandro)

Born from the pen of Carlo Lucarelli, creator of the series, and taken in TV by Manetti Bros., Coliandro is one of those series that you don't expect to find in the Italian generalist TV. Yet fortunately there is, and it works (well) since 2006. L'ispettore Coliandro (The Inspector Coliandro) is, as the tagline of the series says, "the clumsy arm of the justice": more interested in beautiful women, that to the cases of the police headquarter of Bologna, Coliandro is undoubtedly an atypical policeman with the obsession for Clint Eastwood and for his 44 magnum. Among the great merits of the series, special mention goes to the rediscovery of the B-movie and of the genre cinema, declined in each episode with skill and irony by Manetti brothers.

Non uccidere (Don't kill)

The perfect series for those who has never able to get passionate to the Italian crime novels and has always dreamed TV series able to confront with great foreign crime novels. Non Uccidere (Don't kill) has nothing in common with police commissioners and marshals of the Italian television, because it manages to combine a Nordic taste for the thrillers with characters and Italian environments. The protagonist is Valeria Ferro (Miriam Leone), a policewoman of Torino (Turin) tough and that doesn't make reductions to anyone, inscrutable behind hers stern look and perpetually hidden in oversize sweaters. Episode after episode, Non Uccidere (Don't kill) enacts investigations that can remember closely the crime news that we read on the newspapers, transforming local cases in universal stories. If you have loved The Killing, you will not able to renounce to Non Uccidere (Don't kill).
